# How Do I Create A Media Profile?

Virtual Machines (VMs) in Skillable Studio can use Media to load files or software onto the VM.

If you want to be able to load an ISO image or a floppy disk into a virtual machine in a launched lab, you will need to create a Media Profile and have the ISO or floppy disk in file format stored in your storage. A Removable Media Profile is used to connect to Lab Profiles so they can be used in a launched lab.

Sharing Removeable Media

We don't recommend sharing media profiles between vendor platforms. However, if you need this removable media to be available to both Microsoft-based and ESX-based platforms, you will need to ensure that the file resides in the same relative location for both vendors.

## Create Media

Once you are logged in, you will need to upload your media file to your **Storage** (see [How do I upload my virtual machine files to the server](/v1/docs/how-do-i-upload-my-virtual-machine-files-to-the-server) article and use the same technique).

1. Navigate to the Lab Series page for the series that will use the media.
2. On this page, select **Create Media** in the link bar towards the top of the page. The profile will open to the Basic Information tab with the following fields:

| Field | Req. | Type of Information |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Name | Y | Name of lab |
| Description | N | Information on what is on the media or how it will be used |
| Series | Y | Automatically filled in from the Lab Series where the process started |
| Organization | Y | Automatically filled in from the Organization in your User’s Profile |
| Type | Y | Drop-down with Optical (ISO) or Floppy |
| Platform | Y | Select the Virtualization Platform that the media will be used with |
| Path | Y | Path to the storage folder where the file is stored |

1. In the **Path** field, you can type in the path or select either **Choose (Microsoft)** or **Choose (ESX)** to browse to those folders to fill in the path to the file. Read the important information below this field before proceeding.

The Enabled checkbox is checked by default so this profile can be added to Lab Profiles. Select **Save** to save the **Media** Profile. This profile can now be added to Lab Profiles in the series from their Media tab.

There are three locations a Media Profile can be created

- From the Lab Series page that will be use the removable media (automatically associates the Media Profile to the series)
- From the Lab Profile page that will use the media.
- From the Admin page on the Media Profile tab (not automatically associated with any Lab Series). This article will be from the Lab Series page.

A virtual machine is the virtualization or emulation of a computer system. Virtual machines are based on computer architectures and provide the functionality of a physical computer.

Skillable's lab building & authoring platform.

Allows content to be presented to a virtual machine as a virtual CD/DVD image. The content is presented as an ISO file. Removable media can be used to upload content for developing labs, can be made available as part of a lab for the Learner to use, or can be used by an instructor can upload their own content to share as part of a class.

ESX hardware virtualization platform that enables the use of virtual machines.

A Lab Series is a container that holds one or more Lab Profiles. The Lab Series contains Lab Profiles and settings for the Lab Series. It is like the cover of a book, while the Lab Profiles are like the chapters within the book.

An organization is assigned to each entity in the TMS, such as, users, classes, subscriptions, and courses. The organization is a basis to determine access given based on roles within the organization and management over the organization.

The virtualization platform that a lab profile will use for virtual machines or Containers. A virtualization platform is not needed for labs that do not use virtual machines or Containers. Options include: - Hyper-V - ESX - Azure - AWS - Docker

Labs in Skillable Studio are housed in a Lab Profile. The Lab Profile contains the information about the configurable settings and the virtual machines that make up a lab. For a Lab Profile to be published it must be part of a Lab Series.
