How Do I Resize The Screen Resolution On My Own Computer To View The Lab Better?

    Article summary

If your lab interface isn’t clear or doesn’t meet the minimum resolution requirements, adjusting your computer’s screen resolution can help. This guide provides easy steps and tips to guide you through the process.

Best Practices for Optimum Screen Resolution

Before we delve into the specifics of adjusting your screen resolution, let’s go over some best practices that will ensure you have an optimal lab experience.

    • Check Compatibility: Before changing the resolution, ensure that your monitor can support the new resolution. If you change to a resolution that your monitor does not support, your screen might go blank or look distorted.

    • Consider Aspect Ratio: Maintain the correct aspect ratio to avoid stretched or squished images. The aspect ratio is the ratio of the width to the height of the screen.

    • Test Before Applying: When you select a new resolution, your operating system will typically give you 15 seconds to confirm the change. If the new resolution doesn't work well, simply wait, and it will revert back.

    • VM Resolution: Be aware that changing the resolution on one VM in the lab does not change the resolutions on the other VMs in the lab. Some VMs may have their resolution locked due to the programs installed and their size requirements, thus they cannot be changed.

Remember, the goal is to achieve a balance between a clear, sharp image and a comfortable size for icons and text. If you're unsure, it's best to use the recommended resolution settings.

Adjusting Your Screen Resolution for Optimal Lab Viewing

There may be times when you want to change the resolution of your personal computer to make it easier to view the lab or if the minimum resolution requirement to run the lab has not been met.

    Where to make adjustments

Please note that the steps outlined to change your screen resolution should be adjusted on your local computer first, not the virtual machines in your lab. If adjusting your local computer doesn't improve your view, please try these steps on each virtual machine in your lab.

To change the resolution on your local computer,

    1. Right-select on your desktop and select Screen Resolution.

    2. If Screen Resolution is not available, select Personalize,

    3. Select Display and Adjust Resolution.

    4. On the Screen Resolution page, select the drop-down for Resolution and slide the bar to the resolution wanted.

    5. Select Apply and in the Display Settings message,

    6. Select Keep Changes.

    7. Close the Screen Resolution window.

You may also adjust the resolution of the VMs in many cases. Once the lab is launched and you have logged into the VM, on the VM's desktop use the process above to adjust the resolution. However, some VMs have had their resolution locked due to the programs installed and their size requirements. Thus they can not be changed. Also, be aware that if you change the VM resolution on one VM in the lab, it does not change the resolutions on the other VMs in the lab.

If the lab author didn’t configure the environment to allow VM screen resizing, the VM may be locked to a specific resolution.
