    What is LTI?

Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) is a standard created by 1EdTech. Its main function is to establish a way of integrating rich learning applications (often remotely hosted and provided through third-party services) with educational platforms.

    LTI 1.3 and its Advantages

LTI 1.3 is the latest version of this standard, and it comes with a new security framework. It uses OAuth 2.0 for authentication and JSON Web Tokens (JWT) for message security. This version provides improved security and added functionalities compared to its predecessors.

    LTI 1.3 Supported LMS Systems

Many Learning Management Systems (LMS) support LTI 1.3. These include, but are not limited to:

    • Blackboard

    • Canvas

    • Moodle

    Integrating with Skillable

Skillable is a tool provider that offers hands on labs. Integrating LMS systems with Skillable via LTI 1.3 involves several steps:

    1. Establishing a secure connection: This is done using the OAuth 2.0 protocol, where Skillable will authenticate the LMS using a secure sign-in process.

    2. Sending LTI messages: Once the connection is secure, the LMS can send LTI messages to Skillable. These messages can include various types of data, such as scores or other student data.

    3. Receiving and processing LTI messages: Skillable receives the LTI message, processes the data, and then sends a response back to the LMS.

    4. Launching labs: The LMS then launches the labs provided by Skillable to the user.

    Conclusion

LTI 1.3 provides a secure and effective way for LMS systems to integrate with tool providers like Skillable, enhancing the learning experience by providing access to a wide range of educational resources, including labs.
