SCORM and Skillable Labs
There are many ways that Skillable labs can be launched for Users including TMS direct, LMS LTI 1.3 Integration, full API integration and SCORM Packaged Lab Launcher. The SCORM Packaged Lab Launcher is the fastest and most simple form of Skillable integration that allows launching of labs and returning basic scoring information.
SCORM Version 1.2 Lab Packages
Skillable uses SCORM Version 1.2 for building packages, given its widespread use and support in various LMS. There are 5 different versions of SCORM today, with versions 1.2 being one of the most widely used.
What SCORM Is
Sharable Content Object Reference Model, or SCORM, is a set of technical standards designed to standardize and streamline eLearning content delivery and is a tool for enabling efficient and effective online training. SCORM-compliant content ensures that it works seamlessly across different platforms and LMS.
Skillable uses SCORM in the form of SCORM Packaged Lab Launches to provide integration facilities with your Learning Management Systems (LMS) of choice. It serves as a bridge between eLearning content and LMS, establishing how the two communicate.
How SCORM Lab Launching Works
SCORM was designed to be web-based and achieves compatibility through the creation of content packages that use JavaScript to communicate with the LMS. These packages can be downloaded form the Skillable system as a .zip file, and uploaded to a SCORM-compatible LMS. This allows for launching labs in a web browser, tracking learner progress, recording assessment results, and facilitating navigation within labs.
Basic Workflow
Create a Lab -> Download SCORM Package -> Upload to LMS -> Launch
When a Lab is created using Skillable Studio, you can configure the Lab to be enabled for SCORM. Once the lab is configured, download the SCORM package for your Lab from Studio, and upload this package to a SCORM compatible LMS to launch the Lab.
SCORM Geolocation
When a lab is launched that uses SCORM, Skillable can use the location of the user's IP address to determine the best location to assign SCORM resources from. This will help improve latency to the learner’s lab no matter where they are located worldwide. SCORM geolocation also allows region-specific resources to be provided to users, depending on where they are located.
Why It Matters
SCORM promotes content reusability, reducing development time and costs, and ensures secure, consistent learning experiences. Utilizing the SCORM Lab Launcher offered by Skillable expands on these benefits by offering on-demand, dynamic creation of SCORM packages. This allows the encapsulation of Lab launch functionality that can be incorporated within an LMS with the need for complex configurations or coding.
When to Choose SCORM Lab Launching
If your LMS supports SCORM (refer to the documentation for your LMS), you are well on your way to a quick and easy method for integrating with Skillable and launching Labs with minimal setup and time. Choosing to utilize Skillable's SCORM packaging feature will allow for a no-code solution for launching Labs. It is an excellent choice if you are looking for a fast solution to integrating with Skillable.
Please note that the SCORM Lab Launcher only provides basic security and simple results reporting. For more robust authentication and detailed results, consider using LTI 1.3 (if supported by your LMS), or a custom API integration.
