Overview
The Product field in the Lab Profile allows lab developers to associated labs with one or more technology products. This structured tagging system improves lab search, filtering, and reporting within Skillable.
Tagging labs with relevant products helps learners easily find labs that align with their skilling goals, while your Organization gains insights into which technologies are most represented and most used.
All lab builders can assign products to their labs by selecting from their organization’s approved product list. However, only organization administrators with the Product Org Management user role can add, edit, or delete product terms within their organization.
Copying Labs between Organizations
When copying a lab profile from one organization to another:
If the product exists in both organizations, it’s available in the destination organization automatically.
If the product does not exist in the destination organization, your Studio admin must make it available to the destination organization before copying the lab.
Product Metadata Benefits
Adding product metadata to labs provides several key benefits:
Improved discoverability: Labs tagged with product names can be filtered and searched more effectively.
Data consistency: A controlled product list avoids naming variations like Office 365 vs. Microsoft 365.
Better analytics: Standardized product data enables more accurate insights into technology usage.
Governance and security: Only authorized users can create, edit, or delete product terms, maintaining data integrity.
Integration: Product metadata is included in Skillable API endpoints, exports, and imports, making it easier to connect with external systems.
Product Ownership and Visibility
Each product term is owned and managed by a specific organization (the owner organization), with visibility options that determine who can use it:
Action | Who can do it |
|---|---|
Create, edit, or delete a product | Users with management permissions in the owner organization |
Assign or unassign a product to a lab profile | Users with managed organization permissions |
Set a product as Global | Only Skillable admins can add global products |
See which products are assigned to a lab profile | Users in visible organizations, or all users if the product is global |
Global products are available to all organizations, while organization-specific products are visible only to the organizations designed by the owner.
Tips
You can only assign global products or products that are visible to your organization.
If you don’t see the product you need, contact your Studio admin or someone with managed organization permissions.
Product Tagging Use Cases
Key Use Cases
Lab developers: Assign one or more products to a lab when creating or editing its profile.
Admins: Add or manage products available to your organization.
Learners: Filter and discover labs by technology product.
Reporting teams: Analyze product adoption and engagement across the organization.
API consumers: Retrieve product metadata for reporting or integration with other systems.
Sample Tagging Scenarios
Scenario | Description |
|---|---|
Adding a new product | An admin in Org A creates Azure AI and makes it available to Org B. |
Assigning a product | A lab builder in Org B assigns Azure AI to their lab but cannot edit or delete it. |
Removing a product | Only an organization’s admin can delete a product. If the product is assigned to any lab profiles, the admin is notified during deletion. |
Create New Product Terms
Organization administrators can also add new products. If your organization works with a product not already on the list:
From the Skillable Studio Admin dashboard, navigate to Products > Create Product.
On the Create Product screen, fill in the product details:
Name: In the text field, enter the product name. Be sure to follow your org’s naming conventions and use a specific product name to avoid multiple variations.
Owner: Use the dropdown to set which organization owns the product (e.g., HandsOn Training). By default, this field is set to your current organization.
Organizations: Click into the field and select one or more managed organizations to grant access to the Product field.
After filling in the product details, click Save.

Skillable maintains a global product list based on existing lab data. Global products are visible to all organizations. When adding product tags, users can toggle Show Global Products off to see only org-specific products.
Manage Product Terms
Admins can modify or delete any organization-defined product terms. Skillable’s global product list, however, is uneditable.
To manage a product term:
From the Skillable Studio Admin dashboard, navigate to Products > Find Product.
The Find Products page opens. You can also create a new product term from this page.
.png?sv=2022-11-02&spr=https&st=2025-11-04T21%3A27%3A14Z&se=2025-11-04T21%3A44%3A14Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=nsrLW2PG%2Fnrn7J1tN7Y2uzNdlDylOE5thnY0L71V%2Bq0%3D)
To the right of the product you want to manage, select an action:
Edit: Select the pencil icon to open the Edit Product page. From here, you can update the product name, owning organization, and the organizations the product is available to.
Delete: Select the trash can icon to delete the product, and then click Delete Product on the confirmation dialog to verify the deletion. The dialog displays the number of lab profiles the product is currently assigned to.
Analyze Product Usage
Tagging labs with products enables valuable insights into how different technologies are being used across an organization, helping you make data-informed decisions about content strategy and lab development. Filter lab profiles and lab instances by product to see a fuller picture of both content coverage and learner engagement.
Filter by Lab Profile
Use this filter to understand how widely a product is represented across your catalog. For example, filtering by Windows 11 shows how many lab profiles include Windows 11, helping you identify trends like:
Which technologies are most frequently developed or maintained
Potential gaps in your lab offerings
How lab content aligns with organizational priorities
To filter lab profiles by product:
From Skillable Studio, navigate to Admin > Find Lab Profiles.
Use the Add Filter dropdown at the top of the page to select Product Name.
.png?sv=2022-11-02&spr=https&st=2025-11-04T21%3A27%3A14Z&se=2025-11-04T21%3A44%3A14Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=nsrLW2PG%2Fnrn7J1tN7Y2uzNdlDylOE5thnY0L71V%2Bq0%3D)
The Product Name filter is added to the bottom of the lab profile search criteria.
Use the provided fields to specify a product filter (e.g., Does Contain Windows 11).
![]()
Click Search to return lab profiles that match your product filter specifications.
Filter by Lab Instance
Use this filter to see how often students engage with labs that include a specific product. It’s particularly useful for usage and performance analytics like:
Tracking demand for specific technologies among learners
Measuring product engagement over time
Informing future lab development
When a learner launches a lab, the products assigned to that lab are automatically saved to the user’s lab instance.
To filter lab instances by product:
From Skillable Studio, navigate to Admin > Find Lab Instances.
Use the Add Filter dropdown at the top of the page to select Product Name.

The Product Name filter is added to the bottom of the lab instance search criteria.
Use the provided fields to specify a product filter (e.g., Does Contain Windows 11).

Click Search to return lab instances that match your product filter specifications.
Product Tagging Best Practices
When creating and maintaining your product list:
Use the most specific product name possible (e.g., Microsoft 365 instead of M365).
Check for existing terms before adding new ones to keep your product list standardized.
Review and update product tags periodically to ensure accuracy.
Summary
Product metadata enhances data consistency, discoverability, and reporting within Skillable Studio. By tagging labs with the correct technologies and maintaining a clean, standardized product list, organizations can better manage their content and help learners find the right training faster.
