    Administer Labs (Lab Administrators)

    Article summary

Every organization will have at least one user with the Azure Lab Administrator role. This role give a user full control over Skillable Studio components that need to be shared across a large number of labs, where accidental changes could have catastrophic effects. Lab Administrators are typically tasked with ensuring that lab development processes can scale appropriately in their organization and are empowered to create, configure, and maintain a number of setting or objects for their organization, as outlined in this article.

When a user has the Azure Lab Administrator role in Skillable Studio, they can do the following activities:

    • Specify subscriptions & authentication information for labs to deploy in Azure.

    • View, create and edit Lab Templates, to provide lab developers with a reliable configuration & quick starting point.

    • View, create and edit Script Templates, for lab developers to have access to a shared library of scoring or automation scripts.

    • View, create and edit Themes that tailor the look and feel of the Lab Client for learners.

    • View, create and edit Lab Tags that allow for managed key:value pairs to add metadata values on labs.

    • View, create and edit Lab Evaluations, to receive valuable feedback about the lab experience from learners.

    • Manage user accounts & roles that allow for more individuals to manage, build, or support labs.

    Subscriptions & Authentication Information

Skillable’s labs running on the Azure platform are fueled by their Cloud Slice capabilities, and require a Cloud Subscription Pool in order to know what Azure tenant & subscription to deploy against and have the appropriate authentication information to do so.. Creation and management of these subscription pools are limited to Lab Administrators. Lab developers can view them and assign them to labs, but only administrators can create, edit, or delete them.

    Lab Templates

The Template Gallery allows lab developers to easily search for and select pre-created labs to use as the base for a new lab. While there are ways lab developers can do this with any lab they have access to, the lab templates provide a mechanism for lab administrators to pre-select specific labs they want to encourage their lab developers to use as the starting points as part of a native & streamlined experience.

    Script Templates

The Script Library enables lab developers to create scoring & automation scripts, Automated Activities & Life Cycle Actions (LCAs) respectively, more efficiently and/or with less expertise in scripting languages (PowerShell, BASH, etc.). Similar to Lab Templates, Script Templates provide lab developers a way to easily search for and select pre-created scripts to use as the base for a new script. While lab developers can view and use any script templates, only lab administrators can create, edit, or delete them.

    Themes

Themes are Skillable Studio’s mechanism for customizing the lab interface. By using themes, the lab experience can look and feel like a direct extension from your organization’s brand rather than Skillable’s. With themes, you can customize everything from simple options to change various colors & logos to advanced options for defining custom CSS and Javascript.

    Lab Tags

Lab Tags enable you to apply custom metadata to your labs. This metadata can be harnessed in various ways including easier organization & searching when pulling labs over the API, searching in Skillable Studio, custom filters in your lab template gallery, and automatic tagging in Skillable TMS for course organization. Using Quick Tags configured on your organization, you can choose to make assignment of them required by lab developers as they are building labs. To set a tag as a Quick Tag, contact Skillable Support to add it on your organization.

    Lab Evaluations

Lab Evaluations allow you to capture user feedback about your labs at the end of their lab instance. These can be as brief or as long as you’d like, including possible options like multiple choice questions, grading matrixes, stared or numbered rating scales, and comment/essay text boxes. Evaluations can be configured to where all items require a response, some items require a response, or responses are completely optional.
